What a band 5 post actually is

Band 5 is the newly qualified registered professional. You have your degree, you are on the register, and you carry your own caseload — usually rotating through several services in the first two years so you see the breadth of the work before you specialise.

The band is attached to the post, not to you. Job evaluation matches the job description against national profiles, so two people doing genuinely different work in the same team can sit at different bands, and moving employer at the same band means no change in basic pay at all. That is the practical reason people compare bands rather than salaries when they look at NHS jobs.

You reach band 5 by completing an approved pre-registration programme and joining the register. There is no separate preceptorship year to serve first, though most employers run a structured preceptorship programme for your first six to twelve months.

Plenty of band 5s arrive from a band 4 assistant practitioner or a support worker post, by way of a degree apprenticeship or a full-time degree. That is a change of professional status rather than a promotion: band 5 requires registration, and no amount of experience at band 4 substitutes for it. The top of band 4 in England is £31,157 and band 5 starts at £32,073, so the money is not the point of the move — registration is. Where you land within band 5 depends on the employer's assessment of relevant experience, and starting above the bottom point is possible but not automatic.
