What a band 6 post actually is

Band 6 is the specialist grade. You hold a defined clinical specialty, you take the more complex cases within it, and you supervise students and band 5 staff. Most allied health professionals reach band 6 within two to four years of qualifying and spend the largest part of their career there.

The band is attached to the post, not to you. Job evaluation matches the job description against national profiles, so two people doing genuinely different work in the same team can sit at different bands, and moving employer at the same band means no change in basic pay at all. That is the practical reason people compare bands rather than salaries when they look at NHS jobs.

You reach band 6 by applying for a band 6 post. In practice that means a period at band 5 — often around two years — plus evidence of a developing specialty, some supervision or teaching experience, and usually a piece of service improvement or audit work you can talk about at interview.

Coming from band 5: the top of band 5 in England is £39,043 and band 6 starts at £39,959, so a promotion taken at the top of the band below is a smaller immediate rise than the gap between the two starting salaries suggests — what you gain is the ceiling you are moving under. Where you land within band 6 depends on the employer's assessment of relevant experience, and starting above the bottom point is possible but not automatic.
