What a band 8a dramatherapist actually does

Band 8a is a consultant practitioner, a clinical lead or a service manager. The unit of responsibility is the service rather than the caseload: staffing, waiting lists, budget, quality and the professional standards of everyone in it. Consultant-practitioner posts keep a specialist clinical caseload alongside research, education and strategic work; management posts largely do not. There are far fewer of these jobs than of the bands below, and they do not come up often.

The setting changes the job more than the band does. Dramatherapists work in NHS mental health trust, community mental health team, child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS), mainstream and special schools, social services, prisons and secure units, charities and third sector and private practice, and a band 8a post in one of those looks very different from a band 8a post in another — same evaluation, same money, different week. When you compare two adverts at this band, the questions that separate them are the caseload mix, the rota, and whether the service is staffed to establishment.

Dramatherapists use role play, storytelling, movement, puppetry, improvisation and script work as the main therapeutic medium. They create a safe, structured space where people can rehearse difficult situations, express feelings at one remove through character and metaphor, and build confidence in relating to others. A typical week involves assessing referrals, planning and running individual and group sessions, adapting material for different ages and abilities, writing clinical notes, taking supervision and liaising with teachers and clinical colleagues.

Getting to band 8a

You get to band 8a by being appointed to a lead, consultant or service manager post. Expect to need a master's or doctoral qualification, a body of work you have published or presented, and demonstrable responsibility for a service — budget, staffing, or a regional pathway — rather than for a caseload. Many people reach it by way of a secondment or an acting-up arrangement when a post falls vacant, so putting yourself forward for those at band 7 is the practical step.

Coming from band 7: the top of band 7 in England is £56,515 and band 8a starts at £57,528. If you are already at the top of the band below, the immediate rise on promotion is smaller than the gap between the two starting salaries suggests — what you gain is the ceiling you are moving under, not the step itself. Where you are placed within band 8a depends on the employer's assessment of your relevant experience; starting above the bottom point happens, but it is not automatic.

One thing worth planning around: basic pay is not the whole payslip. Unsocial hours enhancements for nights, weekends and bank holidays, and on-call availability payments, are paid on top where the service runs them, and they can separate two band 8a posts advertised at identical salaries. The NHS pension — a defined benefit career-average scheme with a substantial employer contribution — comes off before you see it and is genuinely part of what the post pays.
